RP-467 Senior Citizens Exemption:
Residential property owned by persons 65 years of age or older, owned by at least one of its owners for a minimum of 12 consecutive months prior to application, and who also meet the income guidelines is eligible to be partially exempt from general municipal taxes.
- No exemption may be granted by a school district to property where a resident child attends a public school.
- No exemptions are allowed for special districts, such as fire districts.
- An annual application is required with proof of income.
- Qualifying income is calculated as defined in Real Property Tax Law, section 467.
- A property may not receive the Senior Citizens Exemption AND the Exemption for Persons with Disabilities and Limited Incomes (Real Property Tax Law, section 459-c). However, where one or more owners qualify for this exemption, and the other owner qualifies for exemption under section 459-c, the owners may choose the more beneficial exemption.
